Furiosa is taking no prisoners in her quest for freedom.
Anya Taylor-Joy stars as a younger version of warrior renegade Furiosa in a new trailer for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," which serves as a prequel to the George Miller-directed sci-fi action film "Mad Max: Fury Road."
In the trailer, which dropped Thursday, Furiosa stares across a desolate wasteland as a haunting narration plays: "Whatever you have to do, however long it takes, promise me you’ll find your way home."
The dystopian action-adventure sees Furiosa get abducted from the Green Place of Many Mothers and become a captive of a Biker Horde, led by the Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). As Dementus gets caught up in a war for dominance with The Immortan Joe, Furiosa strives to find her escape.
Furiosa and Dementus weave their way through intense action sequences, including one scene where Furiosa deftly shoots a harpoon at an enemy.
"The question is, do you have it in you to make it epic," Dementus asks a motorbike-suited Furiosa at the end of the clip.
Released in 2015, the upcoming movie's predecessor "Mad Max: Fury Road" starred Charlize Theron as Furiosa alongside Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult and Zoë Kravitz. The film won six Academy Awards in 2016, including the Oscars for best achievement in film editing and best achievement in visual effects.
Taylor-Joy told USA TODAY in November 2022 that she avoided reaching out to Theron for advice before "Furiosa," but with shooting wrapped on the film, she was hoping the actresses could meet face to face.
"She's such an inspiration and such a talented, talented woman," Taylor-Joy said. "We were both very respectful of one another. I think we both really wanted to reach out and it was that respect that kept us (from doing so). But now that it's over, I'm really excited to have dinner with her, and just get to know each other and swap war stories."
"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" hits theaters on May 24, 2024.
